PRECISION

Positive: Precise communication

Negative: Imprecise communication

Even when communication between us is good and focused on our common task, it does no good if shared information is imprecise or even outright wrong. 

​

When this happens, it usually has clear consequences in the form of errors, delays or other waste in the organization.

 

When communication becomes imprecise, we usually have to search and validate our knowledge and information elsewhere. 

It goes beyond the trust between us when we repeatedly receive inaccurate or incorrect information. Trust will decrease and thus also the likelihood that in the future we will seek to coordinate or seek our knowledge from each other.

Examples of imprecise communication:

The salesman in the pencil factory is targeted by his customer, who needs 300 green pencils for a conference as soon as possible. In the call to his colleague in production, he is told that he will make them as soon as he has time. When the salesman is about to call his customer, he hesitates. Should he say they can make it or send him on?

In the pencil factory, an internal function must keep control of production. The function produces a report every month. But in production, it is found that the reports do not describe the production correctly, and it is also assessed that the reports are tainted with errors. Therefore, production now does the same internal control itself.

​

The newly hired nurse at the small private hospital tried as best as possible to keep up with an evening of great pressure. When she finally got hold of a doctor to ensure the dosage of some medicine, she was told 'just give her 2', after which the doctor hurried on. The nurse stood back and had to sit down when she had to assess whether the doctor was talking about pills, drops or milliliters.
